The paper considers a model for a magnetic bearing system, a second-order differential equation with time-delayed arguments. The model has always an equilibrium in the origin. The paper first classifies the different possible bifurcations of equilibria (transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations), noting that the origin may have an eigenvalue zero of algebraic multiplicity up to three for certain parameter values. The authors go on to study the parameter constellation, where the eigenvalue zero of the origin is simple. By means of a normal form transformation, the authors derive a scalar cubic ordinary differential equation that determines the dynamics near the origin. This allows them to classify regions of stability of the origin and pitchfork and transcritical bifurcations in terms of the original parameters of the system.
