The authors give a geometric construction of canonical bases for quantum generalized Kac-Moody algebras. In particular, the authors extend Ringel's Hall algebra approach to the case of quantum generalized Kac-Moody algebras, and generalize Lusztig's construction of canonical bases in terms of perverse sheaves, using semisimple rather than simple perverse sheaves. It is conjectured that the canonical basis the authors construct coincides with the global basis constructed in [\textit{H. Jeong}, the first author, and \textit{M. Kashiwara}, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 90, No. 2, 395--438 (2005; Zbl 1085.17009)]. This conjecture is proved for generalized Kac-Moody algebras with no isotropic simple roots (this includes, in particular, the Monster Lie algebra).
