The main result in this paper is that for \(R\) a finitary, hereditary algebra over a finite field and \(A\) an integral domain, the Ringel-Hall algebra \(H_{{\mathcal A},v}(R)\) should have a comultiplication \(r\) such that \(r(u_i)=u_i\otimes 1+1\otimes u_i\) for all \(i\in I\) and \(r\) is both co-associative and also multiplicative in \(H_{{\mathcal A},v}(R)\otimes H_{{\mathcal A},v}(R)\) by some identities. \(H_{{\mathcal A},v}(R)\) is an associative \(\mathbb N\)-graded \(\mathcal A\)-algebra and has a symmetric, bilinear, non-degenerate form \((-,-):H_{{\mathcal A},v}(R)\otimes H_{{\mathcal A},v}(R)\to{\mathcal A}\) by \((u_\alpha,u_\beta)=\delta_{\alpha\beta}{1\over a_\alpha}\) with \((x,y,z)=(r(x),y\otimes z)\) for all \(x,y,z\in H\). The structure of \(H_{{\mathcal A},v}(R)\) revealed here is similar to that of an algebra \(f\) defined by \textit{G. Lusztig} [Introduction to quantum groups. Boston, MA: Birkhäuser (1993; Zbl 0788.17010)]. The author describes the class \({\mathcal L}({\mathcal A},v,I)\) of associative, graded algebras which includes Lusztig's algebra \(f\) and also Ringel's composition algebra \(C_{{\mathcal A},v}(R)\).
