Let \(A\) be an abelian variety over a number field \(K\) and let \(P\) and \(Q\) be elements in \(A(K)\), the set of \(K\)-rational points. The original support conjecture asserts that if the order of \(Q\) mod \({\mathfrak p}\) divides the order of \(P\) mod \({\mathfrak p}\) for almost all primes \({\mathfrak p}\) of \(K\), then \(Q\) lies in the image of \(P\) under an endomorphism of the abelian variety. This is known to be true for elliptic curves when the two points have the same reduced order for almost all primes and to be false for abelian varieties of higher dimension. The authors show that the weaker conjecture that \(Q\) is the translation by a torsion point of the image of \(P\) under an endomorphism is also false and present a counter-example.
