The authors develop a Liouville-Green asymptotic approximation theory for a class of linear second-order matrix differential equations of the form \[ y''= [f(t)A+ G(t)]y,\quad t\in [a,\infty),\tag{\(*\)} \] where \(A\) and \(G(t)\) are matrices and \(f\) is a scalar function. They obtain an explicit representation for a basis of the right-module of solutions of \((*)\). Precise computable bounds for the error terms are provided. The double asymptotic nature with respect to both \(t\) and some parameter entering the matrix coefficient is discussed. Several examples are given to illustrate the results obtained. Furthermore, application to certain space-discretized partial differential equations of convection-diffusion and of wave equation type are presented.
