This paper is a survey of a major problem in invariant theory, namely to find bounds on the degrees of the generators of minimal generating sets for the invariant ring of a group acting on a polynomial ring. Written in an engaging style, the author uses tools from group representation theory, combinatorics, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry and algebraic topology.
