The authors study several general properties of optimal domains in the case of rearrangement invariant spaces for the Hardy operator. In particular, it is shown that this domain can be represented as the space of integrable functions with respect to a vector measure defined on a \(\delta\)-ring. Also, they show that the optimal domain is never a rearrangement invariant space for the Hardy operator. Finally, they prove that the optimal domain admits a vector-valued integral representation and they identify this domain for a minimal Lorentz space.
