By means of the trace inner product the set \(S\) of positive invertible Hilbert-Schmidt operators can be given a Riemann structure that makes \(S\) a nonpositively curved, simply connected, and metrically complete Hilbert manifold that is a universal model of noncompact symmetric spaces isometrically embeddable into \(S\). Familiar properties of the operator algebra then translate into geometric properties of \(S\). In this way, one can in turn prove some new results about that operator algebra.
