In this paper the dimension of the space \(S_2^k (\Gamma_0(p)\) of Siegel cusp forms of degree \(2\), weight \(k\) and prime level \(p\) for Haupttypus is considered. The main result is a complete list in the cases (\(k=2\), \(p \leq 41\)), (\(k=3\), \(p \leq 23\)), and (\(k=4\), \(p \leq 13\)). Parts of the results had been previously conjectured by \textit{K. Hashimoto} [J. Fac. Sci. Univ. Tokyo Sect. IA Math. 30, 403--488 (1983; Zbl 0528.10019)]. Moreover it had been shown recently by \textit{T. Ibukiyama} and \textit{N. Skoruppa} that Siegel cusp forms of weight 1 do not exist [Abh. Math. Semin. Univ. Hamb. 77, 229--235 (2007; Zbl 1163.11038)]. The proofs of the results of this paper depend on the restriction technique related to the Witt operator (see also the reviewer [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 136, No. 12, 4167--4173 (2008; Zbl 1204.11084)]) and vanishing theorems [Math. Ann. 318, 205--234 (2000; Zbl 0972.11035)]. Moreover certain results on Saito-Kurokawa lifts and Yoshida lifts are involved. Finally the authors announce an extension of their work towards the determination of paramodular cusp forms of weight two.
