Let \(M\) be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension \(n\geq3\). Assume \(M\) is a spin manifold and fix the spin structure. The author establishes an analogue of the classical Sobolev inequality: Theorem: Assume that the Dirac operator \(D\) is invertible. Then for any \(\varepsilon>0\), there is a constant \(B(\varepsilon)\) so that \[ \int_M\langle D\phi,\phi\rangle|\leq(K(n)+\varepsilon)\left(\int_M|D\phi|^{2n\over n+1}\right)^{n+1\over n} +B(\varepsilon)\left(\int_M|\phi|^{2n\over n+1}\right)^{n+1\over n} \] for all \(\phi\in H_1^{2n\over n+1}\) where \(K(n):=\lambda_{\min}(S^n)^{-1}\). The author uses this to examine the existence of solutions for a non-linear equation involving the Dirac operator. He also proves a general upper bound for \(\lambda_{\min}\). The paper concludes with a brief study of the case of manifolds with boundary using the chiral bag boundary condition.
