Let \((X,L)\) be a polarized manifold of dimension \(n\), i.e., \(X\) is a smooth complex projective variety and \(L\) is an ample line bundle on \(X\). In previous papers the author introduced some \textit{sectional} invariants associated to \((X,L)\). In fact notions of \(i\)-sectional genus \(g_i(X,L) \), \(i\)-sectional arithmetic genus \(\chi^{H}_i (X,L)\), \(i\)-sectional Euler number \(e_i(X,L)\), \(i\)-sectional Betti number \(b_i(X,L)\) and \(i\)-sectional Hodge number \(h_{i}^{j,i-j}(X,L)\) are provided [last three in \textit{Y. Fukuma}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 209, No. 1, 99--117 (2007; Zbl 1106.14003)]. The inspiration for these definitions is the case when \(L\) is spanned where Bertini theorem allows to take the intersection of the proper number of sections to get a smooth subvariety \(X_i \subset X\) with which one can define the invariants. In this paper the computation of the \(i\)-sectional Euler numbers, Betti and Hodge numbers of scrolls are considered (see Thms. 3.1 and 3.2), being a scroll a polarized variety \((P,H)\) where \(P\) is a projective bundle \(P_X(E)\) over \(X\) and \(H\) is its tautological line bundle. In Section 4 when the rank of \(E\) is bigger than or equal to \(\dim(X)-1\) a new invariant \(v\) for \((P,H)\) (or equivalently for \((X,E)\)) is introduced when \(\dim(X)\geq 3\). It is defined in terms of the first and last two Chern clases of \(E\), the dimension of \(X\) and its canonical bundle. To be precise: \[ v:=v(X,E)={1\over 2}((n-2)c_n(E)+c_{n-1}(E)(K_X+c_1(E))). \] This invariant is proved to be non-negative (see Thm. 4.1) and the cases \(v=0\) and \(v=1\) are described (see Thm 4.2). Moreover, when \(E\) is spanned it is shown that \(v\) is greater than or equal the irregularity of \(X\). Some conjectures and examples concerning the difference between \(v\) and the irregularity are also provided.
