The present paper is an essentially self-contained continuation of a series of papers by the authors on passive linear discrete time invariant state/signal systems [Part~I, Oper.\ Theory, Adv.\ Appl.\ 161, 115--177 (2006; Zbl 1114.47014); Part~II, Int.\ J.\ Robust Nonlinear Control 17, No.\,5--6, 497--548 (2007; Zbl 1113.93072); Part~III, Theta Series in Advanced Mathematics 7, 29--68 (2007; Zbl 1190.47092); Part~IV, Complex Anal.\ Oper.\ Theory 1, No.\,4, 457--521 (2007; Zbl 1149.47059)]. In the paper under review, passive state/signal systems and passive behaviors (future, full and past) are studied in detail, in particular, input and output maps of such systems and the past/future map of passive behaviour. Furthermore, as an inverse problem, the authors construct two passive state/signal realizations of a given passive future behaviour, one of which is observable and backward conservative, and the other controllable and forward conservative.
