For a topological group \(G\) the kernel \(\mathbf n(G)\) of the canonical homomorphism \(G\to bG\) into the Bohr compactification of \(G\) is called the von Neumann radical of \(G\). The principal result of the paper is Theorem B saying that for every prime number \(p\) and every point \(x\) in the quasicyclic group \(\mathbb Z(p^\infty)\) the cyclic subgroup \(\langle x\rangle\) generated by \(x\) coincides with the von Neumann radical \({\mathbf n}(\mathbb Z(p^\infty),\tau)\) for a suitable Hausdorff group topology \(\tau\) on \(\mathbb Z(p^\infty)\). For \(p>2\) this result was proved by \textit{G. Lukács} [Topology Appl. 153, No. 15, 2922--2932 (2006; Zbl 1103.22001)]. Theorem B implies Theorem A saying that each abelian group \(G\) with infinite torsion subgroup admits a Hausdorff group topology \(\tau\) such that the von Neumann radical \(\mathbf n(G,\tau)\) is finite but not trivial. Those theorems are proved by the method of \(T\)-sequences.
