Lifshitz universality classes were introduced in the context of magnetic systems. They comprise examples with two ordered phases as well as one disordered phase. The present paper extends the previous work [Ann. Phys. 324, No. 1, 178--204 (2009); erratum ibid. 324, No. 11, 2452 (2009; Zbl 1163.81011)] of approaching the critical region by systems with arbitrary competing interaction. If compared with the ordinary universality hypothesis, we encounter an additional parameter which refers to the number of spatial dimensions in which a competition takes place. The major technical tool is an exploitation of a reformulation of the problem in terms of massive scalar field theory. The critical indices of generic Lifshitz points were evaluated, an existence of Callan-Symanzik-Lifshitz equations at the critical dimension has been proved, together with a multiplicative renormalizability of vertex functions.
