Building on earlier work by Popovych (2006) and Popovych-Eshraghi (2004), the authors develop a systematic approach to the group classification of differential equations based on the notions of conditional equivalence group, normalized class of differential equations and admissible point transformations. By way of application, using a combination of algebraic and compatibility methods, they provide a complete group classification for a particular class of nonlinear \((1+1)\)-dimensional Schrödinger equations with modular nonlinearities and potentials, and introduce the complete classification of \((1+2)\)-dimensional cubic Schroedinger equations with potentials. They point out that the approach can be applied to study symmetry properties of a wide range of differential equations.
