In the paper under review the author presents a generating function formula for the Betti numbers of Nakajima quiver varieties and shows that this formula is a \(q\)-deformation of the Weyl-Kac character formula. To prove the formula the author uses arithmetic Fourier transform for holomorphically symplectic quotients. As an application it is shown that the constant term of the polynomial counting absolutely indecomposable representations of a quiver equals the multiplicity of a certain root in the corresponding Kac-Moody algebra. -- This completes the proof of Kac's conjecture [from \textit{V. G. Kac}, in Invariant theory, Proc. 1st 1982 Sess. C.I.M.E., Montecatini/Italy, Lect. Notes Math. 996, 74-108 (1983; Zbl 0534.14004)]. An alternative proof of the main results of this paper can be found in [\textit{S. Mozgovoy}, ``On the multiplicities of the irreducible highest weight modules over Kac-Moody algebras'', \url{arXiv:math/0609349}].
