This paper studies the relations between large tilting modules and representation type. Let \(R\) be a hereditary Artin algebra. Finitely generated indecomposable \(R\)-modules fall into three classes of modules: preprojective modules, regular modules and preinjective modules. \textit{C. M. Ringel} initiated the study of infinite dimensional modules by investigating some torsion pairs in \(\mathrm{Mod-}R\) of all right modules [in Gruppi abeliani e loro relazioni con la teoria dei moduli, Conv. Roma 1977, Symp. math. 23, 321-412 (1979; Zbl 0429.16022)]. For example, he considered the torsion pair \((\mathcal{P,L})\) of \(\mathrm{Mod-}R\) generated by preprojective modules. In fact, there is a tilting module \(L\) such that \(\mathcal L=\mathrm{Gen}(L)\). Furthermore, as proved in the paper under review, one can read the representation type from finiteness conditions on the tilting module \(L\). For example, \(R\) is tame if and only if \(L\) is Noetherian over its endomorphism ring \(\mathrm{End}_R(L)\). Moreover if \(L\) is of finite length over \(\mathrm{End}_R(L)\), then \(R\) has finite representation type. The authors work actually in more general setup, they consider arbitrary tilting modules over an arbitrary ring. In the first section, using results of \textit{L. Angeleri Hügel, D. Herbera} and \textit{J. Trlifaj}, [Forum Math. 18, No. 2, 211-229 (2006; Zbl 1107.16010)], \textit{S. Bazzoni, D. Herbera}, [Algebr. Represent. Theory 11, No. 1, 43-61 (2008; Zbl 1187.16008)] and \textit{S. Bazzoni, J. Šťovíček}, [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 135, No. 12, 3771-3781 (2007; Zbl 1132.16008)], they realize that a tilting class \(T^\perp:=\{M\in\mathrm{Mod-}R\mid\mathrm{Ext}_R^i(T,M)=0,\;\forall i>0\}\) with \(T\) an arbitrary tilting module corresponds to a resolving subcategory of \(\mathcal S\), and also to a cotilting class \(^\perp C\) in the category of left modules \(R\mathrm{-Mod}\). This allows to associate to \(T\) certain cotorsion pairs in \(\mathrm{Mod-}R\) and \(R\mathrm{-Mod}\). Then in the second section, they characterize some finiteness conditions on \(T\) in terms of these cotorsion pairs and of the resolving subcategory \(\mathcal S\). In Section 3, the authors restrict to the case whether \(T\) has projective dimension one and consider hereditary Artin algebras. The last three sections contain a study of Baer modules and a generalization of a result of \textit{L. Angeleri Hügel, D. Herbera} and \textit{J. Trlifaj}, [Math. Z. 265, No. 1, 1-19 (2010; Zbl 1235.16012)].
