Partially inspired by \textit{C. M. Ringel} [Conv. Roma 1977, Symp. math. 23, 321-412 (1979; Zbl 0429.16022)], the present paper continues the study of infinite dimensional modules over a tame hereditary Artin algebra \(R\). A right \(R\)-module \(M\) is called `Baer' if \(\mathrm{Ext}^1_R(M,T)=0\) for all torsion modules \(T\), and \(M\) is `Mittag-Leffler' if the canonical map \(M\otimes_R\prod_{i\in I}Q_i\to\prod_{i\in I}M\otimes_RQ_i\) is injective, where \(\{Q_i\}_{i\in I}\) are arbitrary left \(R\)-modules. Denote by \(\mathbf p\) a representative set of all indecomposable finitely generated preprojective \(R\)-modules. The authors show that \(M\) is Baer if and only if it is \(\mathbf p\)-filtered. (This is in analogy with the case of an integral domain, where one has to replace ``preprojective'' by ``projective''.) The result is applied to prove that the universal localization with respect to \(U\) of a Baer module is projective, provided that \(U\) is a set of simple regular modules containing a complete clique (that is, the universal localization \(R_U\) is a hereditary Noetherian prime ring). Using infinite dimensional tilting theory, the authors obtain a structure result showing that Baer modules are more complex than the preprojective modules, and they give a characterization of the Mittag-Leffler modules. Note that for a tame hereditary algebra, Baer modules are \(C\)-Mittag-Leffler, where \(C\) is the class of left modules without non-zero preinjective direct summands.
