McShane integrability implies Pettis integrability and the two notions coincide in separable Banach spaces, but not in general Banach spaces; this has been known for some 15--20 years now. So, what about more general cases than separable spaces? This question was discussed by \textit{L. Di Piazza} and \textit{D. Preiss} [Ill. J. Math. 47, No.~4, 1177--1187 (2003; Zbl 1045.28006)], where it was proven that the two notions also coincide for super-reflexive spaces and for \(c_0 (\Gamma)\)-spaces. Di Piazza and Preiss also asked whether the two notions coincide in weakly generated Banach (WCG) spaces, the perhaps most natural extension of the class of separable spaces. The authors of the paper under review definitely kill this hope by showing that there exist a WCG-space and a scalarly null (hence Pettis integrable) \(f:[0,1]\to X\) which is not McShane integrable. Using the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczynski construction, the authors prove that \(X\) even may be taken to be reflexive. Moreover, everything is carried out without using the Continuum Hypothesis. Reviewer's remark: Note that in the very recent paper [\textit{R. Deville} and \textit{J. Rodríguez}, Isr. J. Math. 177, 285--306 (2010; Zbl 1216.46016)] it is proven that Pettis and McShane integrability coincide in Hilbert-generated spaces. In the introduction of that paper, also a more complete story of the comparison of the Pettis and the McShane integral can be found than the one sketched in this review.
