The authors consider the two-dimensional Poisson equation along with first-kind boundary values, and Shortley-Weller-type difference approximations using regular 5-point stencils in the inner part of the solution domain and irregular stencils along the boundary. For the latter, they invoke the boundary element method. The obtained difference formulae are of positive type (in the case of triangular cells without the need for an angle condition). The authors prove theorems on convergence in C spaces and propose different methods to get practically useful formulae using, for the solution of the local Laplace problems which define the weights of the scheme, difference approximations (e.g.\ Shortley-Weller), linear boundary elements, and a solution of the non-square systems for the weights by the pseudo-inverse -- the latter method turning out to be the most accurate in numerical experiments. Computing times are not reported.
