Let \(\pi\) be a set of primes, and let \(G\) be a \(\pi\)-separable finite group. In 1984, Isaacs defined the set \(I_\pi(G)\) of irreducible \(\pi\)-partial characters of \(G\), so that \(I_{p'}(G)=\text{IBr}_p(G)\) for every prime \(p\). By an analogue of the Fong-Swan Theorem for \(\pi\)-partial characters, if \(\varphi\in I_\pi(G)\), then the set of irreducible characters \(\chi\in\text{Irr}(G)\) which restrict to \(\varphi\) is known to be non-empty. The paper under review deals with the general question of characterizing all of the lifts of a given \(\pi\)-partial character. The author defines, for a given normal series \(\mathcal N\) of \(G\) and \(\varphi\in I_\pi(G)\), an \(\mathcal N\)-lift of \(\varphi\) to be an irreducible character of \(G\) such that the irreducible constituents of its restriction to any \(N\in\mathcal N\) are all \(\pi\)-lifts. Then he characterizes \(\mathcal N\)-lifts in terms of the notion of an inductive pair, which is also defined in the paper. This characterization is then used to obtain a lower bound on the number of \(\mathcal N\)-lifts.
