Type-II matrices are a class of matrices used by Jones in his work on spin models. They are Schur invertible square matrices with complex elements satisfying an additional condition. In this paper, it is shown that type-II matrices and their Nomura algebras arise naturally in connection with a range of combinatorial and geometric structures: association schemes, Hadamard matrices, symmetric designs, sets of equiangular lines, generalized conference matrices, strongly regular graphs and antipodal distance regular graphs of diameter three.
