    In an earlier paper of the first author [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 39, No. 2, 203--208 (2007; Zbl 1133.42026)] there were studied the lowest constants in the weak type \((1,1)\) inequalities for the centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator associated to certain finite radial measures, where it was shown that these constants grow exponentially with the dimension \(d\). In the present paper, the authors extend this result to a wider class of radial measures and to some values of \(p > 1\). They also improve the previously known bounds for \(p = 1\) by showing that, for \(p\) close to 1 (\({p\in (1,1.03]}\)), if the measure \(\mu\) is defined by a radial decreasing density with certain mild growth conditions, then the best constants \(c_{p,d,\mu}\) in the weak type \((p,p)\) inequalities satisfy the inequality \(c _{p,d,\mu} \geq 1.005^{d}\) for all sufficiently large \(d\). They also show that the exponential increase of the best constants occurs for certain families of doubling measures, and arbitrarily high values of \(p\).
