Let \(R>0\), let \(U\) be an open set in \({\mathbb R}^d\) and let \(M_Rf\), denote the local uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal function of a locally integrable function \(f:U\to \mathbb R\) defined by \[ M_Rf(x)=\sup_{x\in B\subset U, diam B\leq R} \frac{1}{| B| }\int_B| f(y)| dy \] where \(B\) stands for a ball and \(| B| \) denotes the \(d\)-dimensional Lebesbue measure of \(B\). Similarly the authors consider the local uncentered strong or directional Hardy-Littlewood maximal functions \(M^S_Rf\) or \(M^v_Rf\) defined by replacing balls by rectangles with sides parallel to the axes or segments in the direction \(v\). Also they deal with the local uncentered iterated Hardy-Littlewood maximal function \(M^{e_d}_R\circ\dots\circ M^{e_1}_R f\) iterating over the direction of the axes respectively. It is shown that for any interval \(I\) in \(\mathbb R\) if \(| f| \in BV(I)\) then \(M_Rf\in W^{1,1}(I)\) with an estimate on the norm of order \(\log ^+R\). In the multidimensional case the authors show that the boundedness of \(M_R^v\), \(M^{e_d}_R\circ\dots\circ M^{e_1}_R \) or \(M^S_R\) from \(BV(U)\) into \(W^{1,1}(U)\) fails for general open sets, but these three operators map \(BV(U)\) into \(L^1(U)\) whenever \(U\) satisfy the so called cone condition.
