An important result by \textit{W. Möhres} [Arch. Math. 54, No. 3, 232-235 (1990; Zbl 0663.20027)] shows that any group in which all subgroups are subnormal is soluble. Using this theorem, \textit{H. Smith} [Topics in infinite groups. Rome: Aracne. Quad. Mat. 309-326 (2001; Zbl 1017.20018)] proved that if \(G\) is a locally (soluble-by-finite) group in which every subgroup is either subnormal or nilpotent, then \(G\) is soluble. In the paper under review, the author generalizes this latter result in the following way: if \(G\) is any locally (soluble-by-finite) group in which every subgroup is either subnormal or nilpotent-by-Chernikov, then \(G\) is soluble-by-finite, and it is either soluble or nilpotent-by-Chernikov. This theorem can also be extended to the case of locally generalized radical groups, i.e. groups whose finitely generated subgroups have an ascending series whose factors are either locally nilpotent or locally finite. Finally, assuming that there is a bound for the defects of subnormal subgroups, the main theorem can also be extended to locally graded groups (a group is called locally graded if all its finitely generated non-trivial subgroups contain proper subgroups of finite index).
