Let \(\mathbb{X}\) and \(\mathbb{Y}\) be a real or complex Hilbert space. Let \(\Omega \subseteq \mathbb{X}\) be an open set, and \(F: \Omega \to \mathbb{Y}\) a continuously differentiable nonlinear function. A solution \(x^* \in \Omega\) of the nonlinear least squares problem \(\min_{x \in \Omega}\|F(x)\|^2\) is called a least-squares solution of the nonlinear equation \(F(x)=0\). A local convergence analysis of inexact Gauss-Newton like methods for solving this problem is presented. Under the hypothesis that the derivative of the function associated with the least squares problem satisfies a majorant condition, the method obtained is well-defined and converges. The offered analysis provides a clear relationship between the majorant function and the function associated with the least squares problem.
