    The hyperbolic-parabolic system \[ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}+\nabla\cdot F(u)=\nabla\cdot[D(u)\cdot\nabla u] \tag{1} \] is considered in the \(2\pi\)-periodic torus \(\mathbb{T}^d\). Here \(u(x,t)\) is a density vector, \(F(u)\) is the flux tensor and \(D(u)\) is the diffusion tensor. The main object of the paper is the approximation to the system. Let \(u_0\) is the constant solution and \(\tilde{u}\) is a perturbation about \(u_0\). The approximation has the form \[ \frac{\partial \tilde{u}}{\partial t}+\mathcal{A}\tilde{u}+\overline{\mathcal{Q}}(\tilde{u},\tilde{u})= \overline{\mathcal{D}}(\tilde{u}), \tag{2} \] where \(\mathcal{A}=F_u(u_0)\cdot\nabla_x\) is the linearization of the convection operator about \(u_0\), \(\overline{\mathcal{Q}}\) is the quadratic operator and \(\overline{\mathcal{D}}\) is the linear operator, given by \[ \begin{aligned} \overline{\mathcal{Q}}(Y,Y) & =\lim_{T\rightarrow\infty}\frac{1}{2T} \int_{-T}^{T}\exp(tA)\nabla_x\cdot\left[\frac{1}{2} F_{uu}(u_0)(e^{-t\mathcal{A}}Y,e^{-t\mathcal{A}}Y)\right]\,dt,\\ \overline{\mathcal{D}}(\tilde{Y})& =\lim_{T\rightarrow\infty}\frac{1}{2T} \int_{-T}^{T}\exp(tA)D(u_0):\nabla_x^2(e^{-t\mathcal{A}}Y)\,dt. \end{aligned} \] The following results are obtained in the paper.{\parindent=6mm\begin{itemize}\item[1.] If the system (1) has a trice differentiable convex entropy structure then the approximating system (2) is formally dissipative in the natural Hilbert space \(\mathbb{H}\).\item[2.] If \(\overline{\mathcal{D}}\) is strictly dissipative then the system (2) has a Leray-type global weak solution for all initial data in \(\mathbb{H}\).\item[3.] This solution is unique.\item[4.] The theory ia applied to the compressible Navier-Stokes system. \end{itemize}}
