The author studies the large-time behavior of solutions to the discrete Boltzmann equation in one space dimension. It is proved that under suitable assumptions a unique solution exists for all time \(t\geq 0\) in a neighborhood of an equilibrium state called Maxwellian. Moreover, it is proved that as \(t\to \infty\), the solution approaches a function which is completely determined by the superposition of the nonlinear and linear diffusion waves constructed in terms of the self-similar solutions to the Burgers equation and the linear heat equation. The result obtained is based on the author's earlier work [Proc. R. Soc. Edin., Sect. A 106, 169-194 (1987)].
