In the theory of vertex operator algebras, there are three notions of modules, which are weak modules, admissible modules and ordinary modules. They have the relations: \[ ordinary\;modules\subseteq admissible\;modules\subseteq weak\;modules. \] A vertex operator algebra is said to be rational, if its every admissible module is completely reducible. A vertex operator algebra \(V\) is called regular,if its any weak module is a direct sum of ordinary irreducible modules. Comparing with the definition of rationality, the definition of regularity is obviously not natural. In this paper, the authors show that \(V\) is regular if and only if its weak module category is semisimple, which gives a natural definition of regularity. It may be said that this result will be very useful in the study of representations of vertex operator algebras.
