The authors describe a general form of finite volume methods (FVMs) based on dual-grids for solving elliptic boundary value problems; they also present several important examples of higher-order FVMs. The boundedness and ellipticity of the approximate bilinear form for FVMs are established with the aid of equivalent discrete norms. It is demonstrated that the local-ellipticity ensures the uniform ellipticity of the family of discrete bilinear forms and the mesh regularity for the FVMs (which lead to an optimal error estimate of the methods). Necessary and sufficient conditions for the uniform local-ellipticity in terms of the mesh geometric requirements for arbitrary high-order schemes are provided. Several examples of higher-order FVMs are presented to illustrate the mesh geometric requirements.
