The author studies locally strongly convex improper affine hyperspheres in the 3 dimensional affine space and its singularities. The main result of the paper is that the singular points of the improper affine map are cuspidal edges and swallowtails. The main tool in proving this result is the construction of a generating family, which is inspired by the area function in the non-convex case.
