Let \(\mathcal H\) be a complex separable Hilbert space and let \({\mathcal L}({\mathcal H})\) be the algebra of all linear bounded operators on \(\mathcal H\). As usual, for \(T\in {\mathcal L}({\mathcal H})\), denote \(|T|=(T^{\ast}T)^{1/2}\). An operator \(T\in{\mathcal L}({\mathcal H})\) is said to be a class \(\mathcal A\) operator if it satisfies the condition \(|T^{2}|\geq|T|^{2}\). An operator \(T\in{\mathcal L}({\mathcal H})\) is called scalar of order \(m\) (\(0\leq m\leq \infty\)) if there exists a continuous unital homomorphism of topological algebras \(\Phi:C^{m}_{0}({\mathbb C})\rightarrow {\mathcal L}({\mathcal H})\) such that \(\Phi(z)=T\). Here, \(z\) is the identical function on \(\mathbb C\) and \(C^{m}_{0}({\mathbb C})\) is the space of all finite functions having continuous derivatives of order up to \(m\). An operator is subscalar of order \(m\) if it is similar to the restriction of a scalar operator of order \(m\) to an invariant subspace. We mention some of the main results of the paper. The authors provide some conditions for \(2 \times 2\) operator matrices acting on \({\mathcal H}\times{\mathcal H}\) with mutually commuting entries and class \(\mathcal A\) diagonal terms to be subscalar. The authors prove the following assertion. Theorem. \begin{itemize} \item[(i)] If \(T=A\otimes S\), where \(S\) is a class \(\mathcal A\) operator and \(A\) is algebraic of order \(k\), then \(T\) is subscalar of order \(12k\). \item[(ii)] If \(T=R\otimes S\), where \(R\) is a \(2\times 2\) upper triangular operator matrix with class \(\mathcal A\) diagonal entries and \(S\) belongs to class \(\mathcal A\), then \(T\) is subscalar of order \(24\). \end{itemize} The authors also find the pairs of some subscalar \(2\times2\) operator matrices satisfying the equations \(ABA=A^{2}\) and \(BAB=B^{2}\).
