The authors consider multiply periodic functions (abelian functions), defined with respect to the period matrices associated with classes of algebraic curves and work with generalizations of the well-known Weierstrass elliptic \(\wp\)-function. They discuss how the theory of higher genus functions can be derived by defining them via an auxiliary function, the \(\sigma\)-function and describe how a series expansion of this function can be derived and the results which follow. In addition, they proceed to give an alternative definition of the functions, developed in recent years. This algebraic definition and the following approach is termed equivariant and brings out an \(sl_2(\mathbb{C})\) structure in the equations which can be exploited to reduce the computation involved in working with the functions. Finally the authors present some new results, looking at how the two approaches may be connected giving the explicit mappings for the genus \(3\) hyperelliptic theory and discuss the possible future directions of this research.
