In this paper the finite groups satisfying the condition that any two nonprincipal complex irreducible characters of the same degree are Galois conjugate are classified. The classification delivers remarkable groups, namely: 1) any simple group of prime order; and 2) the simple groups \(A_5\), \(Sz(8)\), \(J_2\), \(J_3\), \(SL_3(2)\), \(M_{22}\), \(Ru\), \(Th\), \(^3D_4(2)\); and 3) \(A_5\times Sz(8)\), \(A_5\times Th\), \(SL_3(2)\times Sz(8)\); and 4) particular solvable Frobenius groups (being specified in the paper). -- The paper is rather technical but very interesting in the long run. There is an Appendix written by Klaus Lux and Thomas Breuer; they use GAP in order to throw away some alleged groups in respect to the wanted classification.
