\textit{Y. Berkovich} and the authors, [in Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 115, No. 4, 955-959 (1992; Zbl 0822.20004)], classified finite groups in which the degrees of the nonlinear irreducible (complex) characters are all mutually distinct. All these groups necessarily are of even order. In groups of odd order every irreducible character degree occurs at least with multiplicity 2. Motivated by this fact, the authors characterize all nonabelian and nonperfect finite groups in which two characters have the same degree if and only if they are complex conjugate to each other. The proof is independent of CFSG. As a consequence of this and the Feit-Thompson theorem, odd order groups having exactly two characters of each degree greater than 1 are classified. These are some extraspecial 3-groups and certain Frobenius groups.
