In this paper, the authors study certain smoothed sums of the Dirichlet coefficients of \(L\)-functions attached to the cuspidal automorphic representations of \(\mathrm{GL}_2.\) These smoothed sums are taken over quadratic progressions \(n\mapsto n^2+d.\) The authors give a lot of background for all the objects and tools they use, including automorphic forms of integral and half-integral weight, the metaplectic group and on some estimates for the Whittaker functions. Although there are many direct calculations, they use the representation theory to bypass some further calculations and to get a uniformity of the results. For the holomorphic forms they use Poincaré series. To handle Maass forms, they ``work directly on the group \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})\) rather than the upper-half plane, which provides the missing harmonics since now one is allowed to vary the weight of vectors in the representation \(\pi\).'' Also, they need to go to the metaplectic cover \(\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})}.\) The main result is Theorem 1, stated already in the introduction. As for the applications, ``moments of \(L\)-functions in families are a central tool in the problem of non-vanishing and subconvexity for special values. Theorem 1 arises in the study of moments of \(L\)-functions associated to quadratic number fields.''
