Let \(f\) be a classical modular form of weight \(2\), odd square-free level and trivial nebentypus, and let \(f(z) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty \lambda_f(n) n^{1/2} e^{2 \pi i n z}\) be its normalized Fourier expansion. The main result of the paper states that there exist absolute constants \(\eta\) and \(\eta'\) such that \[ \sum_{N \leq n \leq 2N} \lambda_f(n^2+d) \ll N^{1-\eta} \] uniformly for \(d\) a prime with \(d \equiv 3 \pmod{4}\) and \(N\) a positive number with \(d^{1/2-\eta'} \leq N \leq d^{1/2+\eta'}\). The proof of this deep result is carried out in several steps: The first step is to use the \(\delta\)-symbol method to turn the problem into estimating exponential sums and then, after several transformations, the desired estimate ultimately follows from subconvexity bounds for central values of \(\mathrm{GL}(2) \times \mathrm{GL}(1)\) \(L\)-functions in the level aspect. As an application of the estimate, the author studies moments of \(L\)-functions associated to class group characters. The result is a bit long to be stated here, but it provides an interesting link between Chowla-Selberg and Gross-Zagier formulas and has applications to heights of Heegner points.
