Let \(n\in \mathbb{N}\) and let \(\mathbb{H}\) be a separable Hilbert space. Assume that \(H\) is a self-adjoint operator in \(\mathbb{H}\) and \(V\) is a self-adjoint operator in the \(n\)-th Schatten-von Neumann ideal \(S^n\). Then the authors prove that, for a sufficiently smooth complex-valued function \(f\) defined on \(\mathbb{R}\), there exists an integrable function \(\eta_n\) (called spectral shift function of order \(n\)) such that \[ \mathrm{Tr}\left( f(H+V)- \sum\limits_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{1}{k!}\frac{d^k}{dt^k}[f(H+tV)]|_{t=0}\right)=\int_{\mathbb{R}}f^{(n)}(t)\eta_n(t)\, dt. \] This result answers affirmatively a conjecture stated by \textit{L. S. Koplienko} [Sib. Math. J. 25, 735--743 (1984); translation from Sib. Mat. Zh. 25, No. 5(147), 62--71 (1984; Zbl 0574.47021)]. Moreover, it is proved that there exists a constant \(c_n\) (depending only on \(n\)) such that the inequality \(\|\eta_n\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R})}\leq c_n\|V\|_{S^n}^n\) holds. All these results have their analogues in the semi-finite von Neumann algebra setting.
