The L-splines represent a large family of smooth splines defined using a linear differential operator. In this paper, the authors study a class of L-splines. In other recent paper [\textit{D. Bister} and \textit{H. Prautzsch}, Curves and surfaces with applications in CAGD. Vol. 1 of the proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Curves and surfaces, held in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, June 27--July 3, 1996. Nashville, TN: Vanderbilt University Press. 35--41 (1997; Zbl 0938.65020)] from the references, the authors have obtained a criterion useful to decide when a given space of parametrically continuous piecewise Chebyshevian splines could be used for geometric design. In the present paper, the authors apply this criterion to L-splines. They establish also necessary and sufficient conditions for the associated splines to be suitable for design. Also, they establish some important theorems and lemmas using this class of operators and also hyperbolic and trigonometric functions. The paper is well written and can be considered to be very important for the study and the development of L-splines.
