In [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser. A, Theory Methods 68, No. 8, 2303--2308 (2008; Zbl 1151.46006)], \textit{P.-K. Lin} presents an example of a nonreflexive Banach space with the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. In the paper under review, the authors characterize reflexive Banach lattices and reflexive Banach spaces with unconditional bases using a new class of mappings that contains the class of nonexpansive mappings. Let \(C\) be a nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset of a Banach space \((X, \|\cdot\|)\) and let \(T:C\to C\). Let \(C_0=C\) and, if \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), define \(C_n\) be the closed convex hull of \(T(C_{n-1})\). Then \((C_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}}\) is a nested sequence of closed, bounded, convex subsets of \(C\) with \(T(C_n)\subset C_n\). The mapping \(T:C\to C\) is a \textit{cascading nonexpansive mapping} if there exists a sequence \((\lambda_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}}\) in \([1,\infty)\) such that \((\lambda_n)\) converges to \(1\) and, for each \(n\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}\) and each \(x, y \in C_n\), \(\|Tx-Ty\| \leq \lambda_n \|x-y\|\). The authors prove that, if \(X\) is a Banach lattice or a Banach space with an unconditional basis, then \(X\) is reflexive if and only if there exists an equivalent norm \(|\!|\!|\cdot |\!|\!|\) on \(X\) such that, for each nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset of \(X\) and each \(|\!|\!|\cdot |\!|\!|\)-cascading nonexpansive mapping \(T:C\to C\), \(T\) has a fixed point in \(C\); i.e., if and only if \(X\) can be renormed to have the fixed point property for cascading nonexpansive mappings. The example of Lin noted above shows that the words ``cascading nonexpansive mapping'' in the theorem cannot be replaced by the words ``nonexpansive mapping''. Using a theorem of \textit{D. P. Mil'man} and \textit{V. D. Mil'man} [Mat. Sb., Nov. Ser. 65(107), 486--497 (1964; Zbl 0125.34204)], the authors then prove that, if \(X\) is a Banach lattice or a Banach space with an unconditional basis, \(X\) is reflexive if and only if \(X\) has the fixed point property for affine cascading nonexpansive mappings.
