The initial boundary value problem to the equation \[ u_{tt}+u_t=\Delta u+\frac{\lambda }{(1-u)^2(1+\alpha \int _{\Omega }(1-u)^{-1}\,\text{d}x)^2}\;\;\text{ in } \Omega \times (0,\infty ) \] with the Dirichlet boundary conditions, where \(\lambda >0\), \(\alpha \geq 0\), is discussed. The first part of the paper is devoted to the case of a local source (\(\alpha =0\)). Using the convexity argument the authors derive some quenching criteria and employing the energy argument they give a criterion of the global existence of a weak solution. The second part is devoted to the case with a capacitor (\(\alpha >0\)). Some criteria for the existence of a global solution to the problem are deduced. Moreover, a quenching criterion to the problem with zero initial data is obtained.
