    It is shown that, given a smooth bounded domain \(\Omega\) of \(\mathbb{R}^N\), \(N\geq 1\), the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system \[ \begin{align*}{ \partial_t u & = \mathrm{div} \left( D(u) \nabla u - S(u) \nabla v \right)\ , \quad x\in\Omega\ , \ t>0\ , \cr \partial_t v & = \Delta v + u - v\ , \quad x\in\Omega\ , \ t>0\ , }\end{align*} \] supplemented with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and non-negative initial conditions, has a global bounded solution provided the diffusion coefficient \(D\in C^2([0,\infty))\) and the drift coefficient \(S\in C^2([0,\infty))\) satisfy the following conditions: \(S\) is non-negative with \(S(0)=0\), and there are \(\alpha<2/N\), \(\varepsilon\geq 0\), \(m\geq 1\), \(M\geq 1\), and positive constants \(K\), \(K_0\), and \(K_1\) such that \(S(u) \leq K (u+\varepsilon)^\alpha D(u)\) and \[ K_0 (u+\varepsilon)^{m-1} \leq D(u) \leq K_0 (u+\varepsilon)^{m-1} (1+u)^{M-m}\;. \] This result extends a similar one by \textit{Y. Tao} and \textit{M. Winkler} [J. Differ. Equations 252, No. 1, 692--715 (2012; Zbl 1382.35127)] which was obtained for convex domains \(\Omega\) only. An important step in removing the convexity assumption on \(\Omega\) is to control the normal trace of \(|\nabla v|^2\) with the help of an inequality established by \textit{N. Mizoguchi} and \textit{P. Souplet} [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. Non Linéaire 31, No. 4, 851--875 (2014; Zbl 1302.35075)] and a suitable Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality.
