    The authors deal with the quasilinear degenerate Keller-Segel system \(\frac{\partial u}{\partial t} =\nabla \cdot (\nabla u^{m}-u^{q-1}\nabla v)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^{N}\times (0,\infty )\), \(\tau \frac{\partial v}{\partial t} =\Delta v-v+u\) in \(\mathbb{R} ^{N}\times (0,\infty )\), \(u(x,0) = u_{0}(x), \tau v(x,0)=\tau v_{0}(x), x\in \mathbb{R} ^{N}\), where \(m\geq 1,\) \(q\geq 2,\) \(\tau =1\) or \(\tau =0,\) \(N\in \mathbb{N}.\) They establish global existence of weak solutions when \(q<m+\frac{2}{N},\) without restriction on the size of initial data. This result improves those of \textit{Y. Sugiyama} [Differ. Integral Equ. 20, No. 2, 133--180 (2007; Zbl 1212.35241)] and \textit{Y. Sugiyama} and \textit{H. Kunii} [J. Differ. Equations 227, No. 1, 333--364 (2006; Zbl 1102.35046)] in which it is assumed that \( q\leq m\).
