This paper studies representation theory of affine Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier (KLR) algebras using the notion of a cuspidal system. This allows the author to classify irreducible modules over affine KLR algebras up to the so-called imaginary modules, a special kind of irreducible modules which can be indexed by certain multipartitions. The author develops some basics of this ``imaginary'' representation theory going in the direction of imaginary Schur-Weyl duality. The theory relates the category of imaginary representations of a KLR algebra and the category of representations of a classical Schur algebra. The author also studies in detail imaginary miniscule representations (those which correspond to multipartitions of \(1\)). These are later used to describe some cuspidal modules. Finally, it is shown that under the KLR categorification, cuspidal modules correspond to dual root vectors of a dual PBW basis.
