The authors give short, efficient, and self-contained proofs for \(\Gamma\)-convergence for the following cases: Compactness, \(\Gamma -\liminf\) inequality, \(\Gamma -\limsup\) inequality. Then, first order \(\Gamma\)-convergence is proved for \(GL_{\epsilon}\) to the renormalized energy for the three cases above. Finally, boundary conditions for the three cases above are considered.
