A structurable algebra is a unital nonassociative (i.e., not necessarily associative) algebra endowed with an involution \((A,-)\), and satisfying some extra conditions which can be translated, as shown by \textit{B. A structurable algebra is a unital nonassociative (i.e., not necessarily associative) algebra endowed with an involution \((A,-)\), and satisfying some extra conditions which can be translated, as shown by \textit{B. N. Allison} and \textit{J. R. Faulkner} [J. Algebra 161, No. 1, 1--19 (1993; Zbl 0812.17002)] into the property that the Steinberg unitary Lie algebra \(stu_3(A,-)\), defined as the Lie algebra with generators \(u_{ij}(a)\), \(a\in A\), \(1\leq i\neq j\leq 3\), subject to the relations: {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize} \item[{\(\bullet\)}] \(u_{ij}(a)=u_{ji}(-\bar a)\), for any \(a\in A\), \item [{\(\bullet\)}] \(a\mapsto u_{ij}(a)\) is a linear map for any \(i\neq j\), and \item [{\(\bullet\)}] \([u_{ij}(a),u_{jk}(b)]=u_{ik}(ab)\), for any \(a,b\in A\) and distinct \(i,j,k\); \end{itemize}} satisfies that the linear maps \(a\mapsto u_{ij}(a)\) are one-to-one. In the proof of this fact, Allison and Faulkner considered a technical identity \((A)\) satisfied by structurable algebras. The paper under review deals with the unital algebras with involution satisfying this identity \((A)\). These are called \textit{pre-structurable} algebras. Several important properties of pre-structurable algebras are studied, and natural examples are given to show that there are indeed pre-structurable algebras that are not structurable. The question of whether any simple pre-structurable algebra is structurable is raised.
