A map \(f\) defined between two topological spaces \(X\) and \(Y\) is called \(\omega\)-\textit{continuous} when \(f|_{A}\) is continuous for any countable subset \(A\) of \(X\). In this paper, the authors present a systematic study of \(\omega\)-continuous maps and the topological properties they preserve. In particular, they look at the relationship between the spaces \(C_p(X)\) and \(C_p(\upsilon X)\). ``We show that \(\omega\)-continuous maps preserve primary \(\Sigma\)-property as well as countable compactness. On the other hand, the existence of an \(\omega\)-continuous injection of a space \(X\) to a second countable space does not imply \(G_\delta\)-diagonal in \(X\); however, the existence of such an injection for a countably compact \(X\) implies the metrizability of \(X\). We also establish that \(\omega\)-continuous injections can destroy caliber \(\omega_1\) in pseudocompact spaces. In the context of relating the properties of \(C_p(X)\) and \(C_p(\upsilon X)\), a countably compact subspace of \(C_p(X)\) remains countably compact in the topology of \(C_p(\upsilon X)\); however, compactness, pseudocompactness, Lindelöf property and Lindelöf \(\Sigma\)-property can be destroyed by strengthening the topology of \(C_p(X)\) to obtain the space \(C_p(\upsilon X)\).'' An outstanding result in this direction is Theorem 3.10, where it is proved that if \(C_p(X)\) is a Lindelöf \(\Sigma\)-space and \(\omega_1\) is a caliber of \(C_p(X)\), then \(X\) is cosmic (it has a countable network). This result answers Problem 4.1 of \textit{V. V. Tkachuk} [N. Z. J. Math. 30, No. 1, 93--101 (2001; Zbl 1009.54035)], Problem 11 of [\textit{V. V. Tkachuk}, Topology Appl. 154, No. 12, 2465--2493 (2007; Zbl 1131.54021)] and Problem 27 of [\textit{V. V. Tkachuk}, Rev. R. Acad. Cienc. Exactas Fís. Nat., Ser. A Mat., RACSAM 104, No. 2, 221--244 (2010; Zbl 1246.54002)]. The paper also contains several interesting examples and open questions.
