The author surveys the following topics in \(C_p\)-theory: \noindent (1) Compact spaces in functional analysis and \(C_p\)-theory. Classes of Eberlein, Corson and Gul'ko compact spaces are considered. (2) The Lindelöf \(\Sigma\)-property in function spaces. Several equivalent conditions are given. (3) Function spaces and the theory of cardinal invariants. The relationship between Gruenhage's W-property and the notion of point-countable \(\pi\)-base is considered. (4) The Lindelöf property and \(D\)-property in function spaces. The author gives several references to surveys of \(C_p\)-theory and discusses numerous solved as well as still open problems. He stresses problems in \(C_p\) theory that were solved using the methods of infinite-dimensional topology and he considers some open problems in functional analysis from the topological view point.
