Let \(K\) be an algebraic number field of degree \(n\) over \(\mathbb Q\) and let \(d_K\) denote the absolute value of its discriminant. Let \(\chi\) be a Hecke character on \( K\) with conductor \(\mathcal{F}(\chi)\) and let \(L(s,\chi)\) denote the Hecke \(L\)-function associated with \(\chi\). Using a result inspired by \textit{S. B. Stechkin}'s work [Math. Notes 8, 706--711 (1971); translation from Mat. Zametki 8, 419--429 (1970; Zbl 0233.10020)], the authors prove the following: If \(K\neq\mathbb Q\), the Dedekind zeta function \(\zeta_K(s)\) has at most one zero \(\rho =\beta+i\gamma\) with \(\beta>1-(2 \log d_K)^{-1}\) and \(|\gamma| <(2 \log d_K)^{-1}\). This zero, if it exists, has to be real and simple. As a corollary they obtain that if \(\chi\) is a primitive Hecke character on \(K\) of order 2, then the Hecke \(L\)-function \(L(s, \chi)\) has at most one zero \(\rho =\beta+i\gamma\) with \(\beta>1-(4 \log A_\chi)^{-1}\) and \(|\gamma| <(4 \log A_\chi)^{-1}\), where \(A_\chi=d_KN_{K/\mathbb Q}(\mathcal{F}(\chi))\). If such a zero exists, it has to be real and simple. Moreover, using approaches due to \textit{D. R. Heath-Brown} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 64, No. 2, 265--338 (1992; Zbl 0739.11033)] and to \textit{H. Kadiri} [Acta Arith. 117, No. 4, 303--339 (2005; Zbl 1101.11029)], they show that for a primitive Hecke character \(\chi\) on \(K\) of order \(|\chi|\geq3\), the Hecke \(L\)-function \(L(s, \chi)\) has no zero \(\rho =\beta+i\gamma\) in the region \(\beta>1-(15.10 \log A_\chi)^{-1}\) and \(|\gamma| <13\tan(\frac\pi8)\). An explicit improvement of this constant \(15.10\) is given for \(|\chi|=4\), for \(|\chi|\geq5\), and also for \(K\neq\mathbb Q\).
