This paper studies the index theorem for elliptic elements on Lie groupoids. Let us recall that the index theorem has first been proved by Atiyah and Singer, and then generalized in several directions. In this work, the authors first review the set up of the theorem. Then, a Lie algebroid version of the Thom isomorphism is explained. Natural geometric operators are then constructed. This construction is finally used to calculate the index formulae. The authors obtain also an expression of Dirac operators in terms of the usual characteristic classes in Lie algebroid cohomology.
